More than 1,600 supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Jigawa have crossed over to the Peoples Democratic Party, marking one of the biggest defections in Limawa ward, Dutse Local Government Area.

The defectors, including men, women, and youths from different wards, gathered at a rally in Limawa on Friday, waving PDP flags and declaring their withdrawal from the ruling party. Many cited failed promises and lack of development as their reasons for leaving.

Receiving them on behalf of the PDP state leadership, the party’s deputy chairman, Umar Danjani, described the defection as a major setback for the APC. He said Limawa has long been a stronghold of the ruling party, producing several influential politicians, and losing such a large number of supporters is a blow to its dominance.

He told the crowd that their arrival strengthens the PDP’s push for what he called genuine change in Jigawa and urged them to unite ahead of future political battles.
Leader of the defectors, Umar Abubakar—popularly known as Young Danmodi—said they left the APC because the community had been abandoned with bad roads, rising unemployment, and worsening hardship. He vowed that the group would work with the PDP to win more supporters across Dutse and other parts of the state.
“Our people were forgotten,” he said. “PDP offers hope, and we’re ready to fight for a better Jigawa.”
The development comes months after the APC welcomed more than 60,000 defectors from opposition parties at a major rally in Dutse.
