Olusegu Awolowo Grandson Segun Awolowo passes at 62

Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

His family announced his passing and spoke of the deep void left behind, noting his role as a steady presence who guided and cared for those around him.

The news quickly drew condolences from across the country. President Bola Tinubu mourned the loss, describing Awolowo as a patriotic figure whose work reflected the values of the Awolowo lineage. He recalled his years of service, especially his long tenure at the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, where he shaped key policies and represented the country at regional and international levels.

Reactions spread through Ogun State, where Governor Dapo Abiodun shared his shock upon receiving the news. He described Awolowo as calm, thoughtful and approachable, noting that he built strong relationships and carried out his duties with care. The governor said the state and the South-West had lost a man who inspired trust and left a lasting mark on public service.

Family history played a key part in his journey. Born shortly after the death of his father, Awolowo rose from early challenges and built a strong foundation in law. He was called to the Bar in 1989 and went on to work with respected legal chambers, gaining experience that later shaped his public career.

His service in government cut across different administrations. He handled roles linked to traditional institutions, legal matters and administrative duties, and later took up positions that shaped social development and transport. His leadership at the NEPC between 2013 and 2021 became one of the defining phases of his career, making him the longest-serving head of the agency.

His work extended beyond national borders when he was elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations for ECOWAS in 2021. Friends, colleagues and public figures across Nigeria have continued to honour his legacy, describing him as a calm force, a loyal leader and a man who gave his best to both his family and his country.
