The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Enugu State says it will not join the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), insisting that health workers in the state are already well paid and motivated under Governor Peter Mbah.

Speaking during a press conference to mark the 2025 Physicians’ Week in Enugu, NMA State Chairman Dr. Sunday Okafor said doctors in Enugu are among the best-paid in the country. He described the strike as unnecessary, noting that Governor Mbah has demonstrated strong commitment to improving healthcare services and workers’ welfare.

“It is on record that Enugu healthcare personnel are the highest paid in Nigeria. We cannot disrupt services where the government is doing well,” Okafor said.

He urged the Federal Government and other state governors to emulate Mbah’s approach by prioritising healthcare workers’ welfare to end frequent strikes.
Okafor also praised the governor for massive investment in healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of Type Two Primary Health Centres across all 260 electoral wards in the state.
He said the NMA would continue to partner with the government to strengthen health delivery and ensure efficiency across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
The theme of this year’s Physicians’ Week, “Healthcare as a Value Chain – Building Efficiency from Policy to Patients,” focuses on improving patient-centred care and addressing health inequalities across the region.
