Youths in Bida, Niger State, on Sunday attacked the convoy of Governor Umar Bago, destroying vehicles and injuring one of his aides following outrage over a failed cash handout scheme ahead of the local government election.

Eyewitnesses said the unrest began after the governor reportedly promised residents financial gifts to be distributed on Friday but failed to fulfil the promise fairly. Many who gathered expecting to receive money were left out when only a few beneficiaries were selected, sparking anger among the crowd.

The Chairman of the New Niger Development Project, Abubakar Mustapha, was said to have sustained injuries during the chaos and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for treatment.

Witnesses said the mob also tore down and vandalised billboards of the governor and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the government of deceit and neglect.

The violence comes just days after a stampede at an earlier cash-sharing event in Bida reportedly linked to the governor’s team left a young girl dead and several others injured.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident, but residents say tensions remain high in the area following the unrest.
