The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned 2025 national convention until it complies with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the Nigerian Constitution, and the Electoral Act.

The decision came after a suit filed by three party officials — Imo PDP Chairman Austin Nwachukwu, Abia PDP Chairman Amah Abraham Nnanna, and PDP South-South Secretary Turnah Alabh George — who accused the party of violating electoral laws in its preparations for the convention.

The convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, was meant to elect new national officers, but the court ruled that it cannot proceed until due process is followed.

In his judgment, the presiding judge also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or accepting any report or outcome from a PDP convention that does not comply with the law and the party’s internal guidelines.
The plaintiffs named nine defendants in the suit, including INEC, the PDP, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, the National Working Committee, and the National Executive Committee, among others.
The court declared that INEC has no power to validate or act on any convention that fails to meet constitutional and legal standards, stressing that political parties must operate within the framework of their own rules and the nation’s laws.
