Tinubu Unveils FUTA Teaching Hospital Pledges New Era For Healthcare In Ondo

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to transform Nigeria’s healthcare system into one that meets global standards, starting with the new Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) in Ondo State.

The president gave the assurance on Thursday during the official transfer of the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) to FUTA. Represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Tinubu said the new federal hospital would expand healthcare access and strengthen medical research and training in the country.

Pate said the administration was partnering with state governments to expand the footprint of quality healthcare services nationwide. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to change the health and social landscape of this country with focus and boldness,” he said.

He assured the hospital’s staff of federal protection, improved welfare, and career growth, adding that the new facility would produce the next generation of medical professionals for Nigeria and Africa.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olamide Adelami, described the handover as “a transformative beginning for healthcare in Ondo.” He said the transition to federal ownership would bring superior funding, modern equipment, and stronger research collaborations.

“This partnership shows how state and federal cooperation can deliver life-changing services,” Aiyedatiwa said, assuring hospital workers of a fair transition and protection of their benefits.

Chief Medical Director of FUTATH, Prof. Olusegun Ojo, said the facility would focus on advanced diagnostics, specialist care, and medical research. He said it would reduce medical tourism and save patients from the cost and risks of travelling for treatment.

“Our goal is to make FUTA Teaching Hospital a centre of excellence for healthcare, research, and training,” he said, promising modern infrastructure, diagnostic tools, and world-class residency programmes.

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, hailed Tinubu and the Ondo State government for what he described as “a gift of hope and healing” for the people.

“This hospital will save countless lives and bring quality healthcare closer to our people,” the monarch said.
