The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to explain the real reasons behind his recent decision to change Nigeria’s Service Chiefs.

The party raised concerns that the move, which comes amid widespread rumours of a coup attempt, has created confusion instead of clarity.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the government’s handling of the development appeared “deliberately unclear,” stressing that Nigerians deserve a full explanation.

While acknowledging the president’s constitutional power to make such changes, the ADC questioned the timing, noting that most of the affected Service Chiefs had been appointed less than three years ago.
President Tinubu, through his media adviser Sunday Dare, announced the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff to replace General Christopher Musa. Other appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The presidency said the reshuffle was aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, but the ADC believes the action may deepen speculation about political instability.
The party warned that abrupt changes in military leadership could unsettle the ranks and urged the government to act transparently to reassure Nigerians that democracy remains secure.
