The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the federal government for dispersing demonstrators calling for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that Nigerians have a constitutional right to peaceful protest.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC would not take a stance on Kanu’s detention since the case was still in court. However, he stressed that the party was deeply concerned about the government’s growing intolerance of public demonstrations.

Abdullahi stated that citizens have the right to express their opinions and stage peaceful protests without intimidation. He said the ADC had not issued any statement on Kanu’s detention but believed that every Nigerian, regardless of their cause, must be allowed to assemble peacefully.

His comments followed Monday’s protest in Abuja, where security operatives used tear gas to disperse demonstrators led by activist Omoyele Sowore. The protesters, who had planned to march to the National Assembly, were stopped by police despite holding a peaceful rally near Transcorp Hilton.
Abdullahi described the restriction as undemocratic, saying citizens should be free to approach lawmakers and submit petitions. He also questioned the legality of any judicial order that limits free expression or peaceful assembly.
The ADC reiterated that while it would not interfere in Kanu’s legal case, it would continue to defend the constitutional rights of Nigerians to protest and hold the government accountable.
