Governor Otu Flags Off 2025 Calabar Carnival Dry Run

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State on Sunday kicked off the first dry run for the 2025 Calabar Carnival, signaling the start of activities for the 20th anniversary of what is widely known as Africa’s biggest street party.

The event, which took place at Millennium Park in Calabar, drew thousands of residents, tourists, and dignitaries. Governor Otu described this year’s carnival as a landmark edition that celebrates two decades of cultural excellence, unity, and creativity that have made the festival a global attraction.

He said the 2025 celebration represents a major milestone for the state and promised that it would be one of the most colourful and energetic editions in the history of the carnival. The governor extended an open invitation to fun seekers and tourists from within and outside Nigeria to visit Calabar and experience what he called “the home of culture and heritage.”

This year’s carnival is themed “Traces of Time”, a concept the governor said reflects the state’s cultural journey through art, innovation, and transformation. He commended the organisers, band leaders, and creative industry stakeholders for their dedication in sustaining the carnival’s global reputation.

Governor Otu noted that the Calabar Carnival has become a unifying platform for the people of Cross River and a showcase of Nigeria’s cultural diversity. He said the state’s “Season of Sweetness” goes beyond governance and economic growth — it is also about promoting happiness, culture, and togetherness among citizens.

The flag-off attracted a high-profile audience that included lawmakers, traditional rulers, state officials, industry leaders, and members of the diaspora community, many of whom appeared in vibrant costumes to celebrate the occasion.

The first dry run also doubled as a route test for the main parade scheduled for December. The grand finale will feature major carnival bands, cultural troupes, and performers from across Nigeria and beyond, setting the stage for what organisers say will be an unforgettable 20th anniversary celebration in Calabar.
