The Labour Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu stands a strong chance of securing a second term in 2027, predicting that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, will not return to the race.

Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Thursday, Ibrahim said opposition parties across the country have become too weak and disorganised to pose any real challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, Tinubu appears politically secure as preparations for the next election cycle begin.

He explained that the ruling party’s advantage was not because of manipulation but rather due to internal divisions within opposition groups. Ibrahim said the Labour Party, in particular, has no reason to accuse the APC of meddling in its affairs, insisting that the problems facing opposition parties are self-inflicted.

Ibrahim also dismissed the possibility of Peter Obi returning as the party’s flag bearer, stating that the former Anambra governor has detached himself from the Labour Party. He claimed that the party had offered Obi its presidential ticket for 2027, but he turned it down.
The LP scribe questioned Obi’s political direction, alleging that his recent public appearances have created confusion about his affiliation. He asked whether the former presidential candidate still belongs to the Labour Party or has shifted toward another platform such as the PDP or ADC.
According to Ibrahim, Obi’s media visibility has not translated into active political engagement, adding that by 2027, the Labour Party expects to move forward without him. He said Tinubu’s position remains strong, especially given the current weakness of the opposition.
