Ogbako Ndígbo Worldwide Endorses October 20 Protest For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

A prominent South-East socio-political group, Ogbako Ndígbo Nile Worldwide (ONN), has thrown its weight behind the planned October 20 #FreeNnamdiKanu protest led by rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

The demonstration seeks the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement signed by its President General, Ambassador Akpelu Azunna, and released on Monday, the group condemned what it described as the Nigerian government’s disregard for the rule of law and its failure to comply with court rulings that acquitted Kanu. It accused the authorities of double standards, saying the continued detention of the IPOB leader was an insult to justice and a threat to national unity.

Ogbako Ndígbo noted that while the government has extended pardons to other groups, including insurgents and militants, Kanu remains behind bars despite multiple legal victories in his favour. The group argued that this selective justice deepens feelings of marginalisation among the Igbo people and undermines peace and equality in Nigeria.

The protest, scheduled for October 20, 2025, is being organised by Sowore under the #RevolutionNow movement. He has called for peaceful marches across major cities in Nigeria and at embassies abroad to demand compliance with judicial orders and the immediate release of Kanu.

Several civil society groups, student unions, and pro-democracy organisations have already declared support for the protest, promising large turnouts across the South-East and other regions.

Ogbako Ndígbo urged Igbo political leaders, governors, lawmakers, business executives, religious figures, and community elders to unite beyond party lines and participate in the protest. The group said the action is not only about ethnicity but about defending justice and the rule of law for all Nigerians.

The organisation also commended Sowore and other activists for their persistence, describing their campaign as a moral call to conscience. It appealed to the federal government to act in the spirit of national reconciliation and release Nnamdi Kanu to pave the way for peace and unity across the country.
