Judicial Residences Project Flagged Off In FCT

The official flag-off for the design and construction of residences for Heads of Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) took place on October 13, 2025.

The ceremony was attended by key government and judicial officials, with the event aimed at improving housing and welfare for judicial officers.

The project, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and supported by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, was initiated under the guidance of the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, alongside the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.

The initiative seeks to provide secure and comfortable housing for judges to enhance their efficiency and independence.

Speaking at the event, the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, PhD, FNIALS, FCTL, FCArb, noted that proper housing is essential for judicial officers to perform their duties without fear or external pressures.

He recalled past support from the FCT Minister during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State, where judges’ residences were provided in Port Harcourt, contributing to the smooth functioning of the court.

The project builds on previous efforts, including the design and construction of 40 judges’ quarters in Katampe District, which faced both criticism and support.

Justice Kanyip emphasized that judicial housing forms part of the official entitlements of judges, ensuring their welfare aligns with constitutional provisions safeguarding judicial independence.

With the commencement of this new housing project, the National Industrial Court expressed readiness to collaborate in ensuring the judiciary remains focused, efficient, and trusted by the public.

The FCT residences are expected to meet high standards and be completed on schedule, further strengthening the Nigerian judicial system.

Officials and stakeholders present at the flag-off praised the initiative as a practical step toward supporting judicial officers and enhancing public confidence in the justice system.
