Super Eagles Survive Scare After Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Angola

The Super Eagles narrowly avoided disaster on Sunday after their aircraft made an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, while returning from South Africa.

The team had been on their way to Uyo for their final 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic when the incident occurred.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the ValueJet aircraft transporting the players developed a cracked windscreen mid-air shortly after taking off from a refuelling stop in Luanda. Acting swiftly, the pilot turned the plane around and safely landed it back at the airport, preventing what could have been a major tragedy.

The aircraft had earlier flown part of the Nigerian delegation to Polokwane last Thursday before reuniting with the rest of the squad in South Africa. It had also been used for the team’s previous journey to Bloemfontein during their World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

Officials said that arrangements were underway to secure an alternative aircraft to complete the team’s trip to Uyo. The replacement plane, to be dispatched from Lagos, is awaiting overflight and landing permits from Angolan authorities before heading to Luanda to pick up the delegation.

The NFF assured fans that the players and officials were safe and in good spirits while waiting for the new flight. Relevant government agencies, including the Ministries of Aviation and Foreign Affairs, were said to be coordinating with ValueJet to ensure the team’s quick and secure transfer.

As the Super Eagles prepare for their decisive qualifier in Uyo, supporters have expressed relief over the team’s safety and hope that the travel setback will not affect their focus ahead of Tuesday’s crucial match.
