The Presidency has criticised activist Omoyele Sowore’s plan to lead a protest in Abuja demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The demonstration, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is scheduled to take place on October 20 near the State House.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate under the African Action Congress (AAC), announced that the rally would begin at 7 a.m. and described it as a major movement for justice. His announcement sparked strong reactions from government officials who view the planned protest as a threat to public order.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, condemned the protest in a statement posted on his X handle. He accused Sowore of using activism as a cover to cause unrest and said the march was intended to create chaos in the capital.
The Presidency maintained that the legal process surrounding Kanu’s detention must be respected, noting that his case on charges of treason is still before the courts. It warned that any attempt to pressure the government through protests could be seen as interference in judicial matters.
The IPOB leader has been in custody since 2021, facing trial over allegations of leading a separatist campaign against the Nigerian state. Despite repeated calls for his release, the government insists that his case will be decided by the courts in accordance with the law.
Authorities are expected to increase security around the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the planned protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
