ASUU Begins Mobilisation For Nationwide Strike As Deadline Nears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has started mobilising members across Nigerian universities ahead of a possible nationwide warning strike, as the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government draws to a close.

The union’s directive follows what it described as the government’s continued silence and failure to act on long-standing issues affecting the education sector. The ultimatum, which began on September 28, is set to expire next week, raising fears of another major disruption in academic activities across the country.

In a circular signed by ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, and dated October 5, 2025, the union said its National Executive Council reached the decision after an emergency meeting held on September 29. The meeting reviewed reports from various branches following a nationwide referendum among members.

ASUU stated that the ultimatum was issued to push the government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement submitted since February 2025, which contains key provisions on lecturers’ welfare, funding of universities, and working conditions.

Professor Piwuna expressed frustration that despite communicating the union’s resolutions to the Ministers of Labour and Education and to the Nigeria Labour Congress, there had been no response or progress. He said this lack of engagement showed the government’s unwillingness to address the issues threatening the future of public universities.

The circular urged members to intensify mobilisation efforts within their campuses to ensure collective readiness for any decision taken after the ultimatum expires. The ASUU president commended members for their patience and unity during the prolonged struggle, stressing that the union’s strength lies in its solidarity.

ASUU reminded members to take instructions only from their branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators and to attend congress meetings regularly for updates.

With the ultimatum nearing its end, tension is growing across the university system as students and lecturers brace for another potential shutdown that could disrupt academic calendars nationwide.
