The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Wednesday as the party’s national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, openly rejected the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom State executive announced a day earlier.

On Tuesday, the national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement declaring the state executive dissolved and naming a caretaker committee headed by Igwat Umoren. But Anyanwu, in a letter dated October 1 to the state chairman Aniekan Akpan, described the action as null and void and directed him to continue in office.

He argued that no formal meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) had been held to reach such a decision, insisting that it was beyond the powers of the publicity secretary to implement actions tied to NWC resolutions.

The controversy comes amid ongoing clashes between Anyanwu and the PDP national chairman, Illiya Damagum, over the conduct of congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States. Conflicting letters to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from both leaders had earlier exposed divisions, with Damagum seeking postponements and Anyanwu insisting the congresses proceed.
The dispute over Akwa Ibom adds to the growing tension within the party as it prepares for its national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Party members now face uncertainty over which faction holds the authority to take binding decisions, as the leadership tussle continues to weaken the PDP’s internal cohesion ahead of 2027.
