Anambra Governorship Seen As Test For 2027 Elections

The Inter Party Advisory Council has described the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election as a major test for Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general polls.

The council linked the credibility of the exercise to the broader challenge of restoring public trust in the electoral system.

In its Independence Day message, the council congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 65th anniversary but stressed that fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency in the upcoming Anambra poll will shape how citizens view democracy moving forward.

The council urged the electoral commission to ensure a level playing field for all parties and candidates. It also appealed to politicians to avoid divisive politics and instead focus their campaigns on issues that affect the people directly.

According to the group, respect for the ballot remains central to the survival of democracy. It warned that the outcome of the Anambra election will set the tone for national confidence in the 2027 elections.

In its message, the council paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, recalling their sacrifices for independence and their vision of a united nation. It called on citizens to use the Independence anniversary as a moment of reflection and recommitment to the country.

The umbrella body of registered political parties also restated its push for inclusive governance, pointing to its advocacy for special seats for women in parliament and stronger representation for youths and persons with disabilities.

It highlighted its role in convening dialogues on the judiciary and constitutional reforms while noting its recent publications documenting the history of political parties and democratic progress in the country.

The council said the shared goal is to build an enduring democracy, adding that the responsibility belongs to both leaders and citizens alike.
