President Bola Tinubu will reopen the renovated National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, on Wednesday as part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.

The theatre, which was renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in July 2024, has undergone a full transformation financed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bankers’ Committee. The Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy partnered on policy and programming to ensure the facility becomes a hub for culture and creativity.

CBN governor Olayemi Cardoso described the renovated structure as a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience and cultural pride. Lagos governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the centre will serve both as a cultural showcase and as a global venue for conferences and performances. Minister of Arts and Culture Hannatu Musawa called the project a gift to the nation and a milestone for the creative industry.
The reopening ceremony will feature artistic performances by the National Troupe and other artists. Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka is expected to deliver special remarks, while Cardoso, Sanwo-Olu, and Musawa will present goodwill messages.
