The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the Federal Government two weeks to resolve long-standing issues affecting the nation’s universities or risk another nationwide strike.

The decision followed the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.

The ultimatum, announced in Abuja by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, comes after months of unheeded appeals. He said the warning became necessary due to the government’s failure to address the persistent neglect of the education sector and the welfare of lecturers across federal and state universities.

ASUU warned that if the deadline lapses without concrete action, members will first embark on a two-week warning strike before moving to a full-scale indefinite strike. The union recalled that it had engaged government through rallies, media campaigns, and repeated appeals over the past three months, all without meaningful response.
The unresolved matters include renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding for public universities, revitalisation projects, and payment of outstanding salary arrears ranging between 25 and 35 percent. Other issues raised are unpaid promotion arrears for over four years, failure to remit third-party deductions, and alleged victimisation of members in Lagos State University, Kogi State University, and Federal University of Technology Owerri.
ASUU urged parents, students, and stakeholders, including religious and traditional leaders, to intervene and press the government into action to prevent disruption of academic activities. The union stressed that government has the resources to restore the university system if it shows the will to act.
