Obi Defends Olubadan Message After Public Criticism

Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has defended his congratulatory message to the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, after it drew criticism over perceived cultural insensitivity.

In his goodwill note on Saturday, Obi referred to the monarch as “my dear elder brother,” a phrase that quickly sparked outrage on social media. Many critics described the wording as disrespectful to Yoruba tradition and inappropriate for addressing a revered king.

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri faulted the choice of words, saying royal fathers should always be accorded full respect in both private and public settings. Similarly, Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, described Obi’s remark as cultural ignorance, stressing that Oba Ladoja deserved to be addressed with due reverence as both a monarch and an elder.

The backlash generated widespread debate, with Nigerians divided on whether Obi’s informal style reflected cultural disregard or simply personal warmth.

Reacting on Sunday through his official X handle, Obi clarified that his words were not meant to slight the throne. He explained that he often addresses respected figures close to him as “my dear elder brother,” noting that he has used the same expression for the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

Obi stressed that he respects traditional authority and protocol, but his intention was purely goodwill and affection toward the new Olubadan. He added that motive should be considered in judging his statement, insisting that there was no malice in his choice of words.

His clarification comes as attention continues to focus on Oba Ladoja’s coronation as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, which has drawn congratulatory messages from leaders across political and cultural circles.
