FG Orders Nationwide Verification Of Academic Certificates From October 6

The Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as higher institutions to begin compulsory verification of academic credentials through the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD).

The policy, contained in a circular signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, will take effect from October 6, 2025.

According to the directive, no appointment will be confirmed without clearance from the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS), which will authenticate certificates, diplomas and awards presented by staff and prospective employees.

Akume explained that each verified credential will carry a National Credential Number (NCN) and security codes for record purposes, stressing that the new process replaces the old system where institutions carried out verifications.

“The reform ensures that every certificate presented in Nigeria is identifiable, traceable, verifiable and validated at the click of a button,” the SGF stated.

Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa said the initiative will curb fake degrees and academic fraud, describing it as a systemic quality assurance mechanism approved by the Federal Executive Council.

Haula Galadima, Executive Director of Communication and Cybersecurity for the NERD programme, confirmed readiness for nationwide rollout. She urged MDAs, schools and private organisations to register focal officers on the agency’s website.

She noted that the NERD Governing Council, chaired by the Education Minister, includes heads of the NUC, NBTE, NCCE, National Library, Data Protection Commission, and committees of vice chancellors, rectors and provosts.

The government said the initiative is designed to safeguard national security, protect the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and enhance the global competitiveness of local qualifications.
