Tinubu, Ogun leaders And Dignitaries Honour HID Awolowo

Ikene, Ogun State, came alive on Friday as Nigerians from across the country gathered to mark the 10th memorial anniversary of Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo, the revered matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty.

The event, held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, family, and friends to celebrate her legacy.

A letter from President Bola Tinubu was read during the service, describing the late Yeye Oodua as a woman of rare courage whose influence went beyond her family to touch generations of Nigerians. The President noted that her unwavering support for her husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and her role in carrying forward his legacy left the nation with enduring lessons in faith, discipline, and love for country.

The service drew top political figures including former Ogun governors, Senators Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, represented by Hon. Muyiwa Oladipo, as well as former Osun governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Traditional rulers and community leaders such as representatives of the Alaafin of Oyo, the Akarigbo of Remoland, and other royal fathers were also present.

In his sermon, Archbishop Olusina Fape of the Remo Anglican Diocese described HID Awolowo as a woman who lived for others and left behind a legacy of faith and virtue. He reminded the congregation that remembrance of the departed is also a thanksgiving for the gift of life, urging the Awolowo family to continue preserving the values their parents upheld.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by Head of Service Kehinde Onasanya, praised Mama Awolowo as a beacon of resilience and godly devotion, likening her to biblical figures who endured storms but remained steadfast in purpose.

The Awolowo family, led by Ambassador Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, expressed gratitude to all who honoured the memory of their matriarch, describing her and Chief Obafemi Awolowo as icons whose legacies shaped Nigeria’s social and political journey.

The commemoration not only celebrated Mama Awolowo’s life but also reaffirmed her place as a mother figure to generations, remembered for her strength, compassion, and enduring impact on the nation.
