The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that more than 4.4 million Nigerians have pre-registered online in the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, four weeks after it began on August 18.

The figure was confirmed in Abuja, with data showing a strong turnout among young people and students.

Out of the total 4,445,505 who pre-registered, 2,141,294 are male, while 2,304,211 are female. The commission noted that the bulk of registrants, 2,924,643, fall within the 18 to 34 age bracket, representing nearly two-thirds of the total. Students account for about 1.1 million of the entries, making them the single largest occupational group in the exercise so far.

On completed registrations, which include both online and physical processes, INEC reported 509,929 entries as of last week Friday. Of this number, 229,758 are male, while 280,171 are female. Young people between 18 and 34 make up 378,132 of the total, while students represent 196,529.
INEC said the figures demonstrate growing interest among young Nigerians to participate in future elections. The commission added that detailed data by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability have been uploaded on its official platforms for public access.
In the Federal Capital Territory, the commission announced that online registration will end on September 15. Physical registration will continue for two weeks at designated centres before being extended to all 62 wards from September 29.
The registration drive is part of INEC’s preparations for upcoming elections, aiming to expand the voter roll and give more Nigerians the opportunity to take part in the democratic process.
