The ancient city of Ibadan is preparing for the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan on September 26, an occasion expected to bring together the country’s leading political figures.

The upcoming coronation has already stirred movement in political circles, with the three leaders reaching out to Oba Ladoja to congratulate him ahead of the event. Peter Obi is also scheduled to visit Ibadan earlier on September 16 to personally pay his respects to the monarch before the main ceremony.

The gathering will not be limited to politicians. Traditional rulers from across Nigeria, including the Emir of Ilorin, are also expected to grace the event. Ladoja shares a deep connection with Ilorin, as he was born in Gambari village in 1944 while his mother was on a trading trip, making his coronation a moment of pride for both Ibadan and Ilorin.

Ibadan will also welcome many of Ladoja’s former colleagues in the Senate during the botched Third Republic, among them ex-Senate President Iyorchia Ayu. State governors across the South-West and beyond have signaled their readiness to attend, turning the coronation into a political and cultural convergence.
Preparations have extended to infrastructure as well. The Ibadan Airport, which has been under renovation since March, is being fast-tracked for reopening ahead of the ceremony. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has completed its assessment, clearing the way for flights to resume so dignitaries can arrive directly in the city. The reopening will also serve upcoming events such as the Peoples Democratic Party convention scheduled for November in Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that the upgraded runway has been completed and other works are in progress to ensure the airport meets modern standards. He noted that local flights will resume soon, making it easier for guests to travel for the coronation.
The event is shaping up to be unique, as Ladoja is not only ascending the throne as a traditional ruler but also brings the experience of a former Oyo State governor and senator. This rare blend of political and traditional stature has drawn national attention, positioning Ibadan as the focal point of Nigeria’s power and culture in the coming weeks.
