The disclosure was made in Abuja by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, during a capacity-building workshop for journalists covering the Senate. He said the president’s directive is focused on reducing transportation costs for farm produce and ensuring the safe movement of agricultural goods across different routes.

According to the minister, high logistics expenses are a major factor driving up the final prices of food items in markets. He explained that the committee is already working to guarantee smooth passage of farm produce nationwide, which would in turn make food more affordable for citizens.

The move, he said, is part of President Tinubu’s broader vision of food sovereignty, anchored on ensuring sufficiency, accessibility, affordability, and nutritional quality of food on a sustainable basis.

Senator Abdullahi also revealed that new programmes are set for rollout, including the Farmer Soil Health Scheme, which aims to boost crop productivity. He added that reforms in the cooperative sector are being prepared, describing cooperatives as vital for resource mobilisation, job creation, and improving livelihoods.

He stressed that the government’s focus on food security combines immediate steps to cut costs with long-term policies designed to strengthen agriculture and ensure stable food supply for Nigerians.
