The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in the push for the unionisation of tanker drivers and employees of the Dangote Refinery and its subsidiaries.

The move comes after NUPENG declared plans to halt fuel loading over claims that the refinery intended to bar its 4,000 recruited truck drivers from joining the union.

In a statement on Monday, PENGASSAN’s General Secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, warned that the association could shut down refinery operations if the standoff is not resolved. He said the refinery’s management had consistently resisted efforts at unionisation despite diplomatic interventions.

According to the association, workers’ rights to organise and bargain collectively must be respected, stressing that denying this right violates both Nigerian labour laws and International Labour Organisation standards.
PENGASSAN said it fully supports NUPENG’s call for total unionisation across the refinery and its affiliates, insisting that fair labour practices, safety, and dignity in the workplace depend on it.
The association urged immediate dialogue among stakeholders to prevent disruption in the oil and gas sector, cautioning that failure to address the issue could have wider consequences across the industry.
Meanwhile, Labour Minister Muhammadu Dingyadi has summoned all parties to Abuja for talks aimed at resolving the crisis.
