The Department of State Services (DSS) has written to X Corp., the company owned by Elon Musk, demanding the suspension of activist Omoyele Sowore’s verified account over a post targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a petition dated September 6, 2025, and signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director General, the agency accused Sowore of using his handle, @YeleSowore, to circulate “false and disparaging” remarks against the President.

The DSS cited Sowore’s August 25 tweet where he wrote: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

According to the agency, the post was personally directed at Tinubu’s official handle, @officialABAT, and posed a threat to national security by provoking protests among the President’s supporters. The DSS claimed the tweet could incite violence, disunity, and damage Nigeria’s image internationally.
The petition also argued that Sowore’s remarks breached sections of the Criminal Code, Cybercrimes Act 2025, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, describing them as “hate speech, online harassment, and deliberate misinformation.”
The DSS asked X to immediately take down the tweet and deactivate Sowore’s account within 24 hours, warning that failure to comply would attract “far-reaching measures” from the Federal Government.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration and has faced repeated confrontations with security agencies in the past.
