INEC Removes 27,817 Multiple Registrations In Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uncovered 27,817 cases of multiple voter registrations during the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the figures were detected after running the new registrants’ data through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

He explained that out of 168,187 persons who registered between July 8 and 20 across the state’s 316 wards, only 140,370 were validated as new voters. In addition, 5,983 valid applications for transfers were approved, bringing the total of new additions to the state’s voter register to 146,353.

“With these additions, Anambra’s voter roll now stands at 2,802,790, up from 2,656,437 before the exercise,” Olumekun stated.

A breakdown of the updated register shows Idemili North leading with 246,318 voters, followed by Awka South with 216,611 and Ogbaru with 188,016. Dunukofia and Anambra West recorded the lowest figures with 83,580 and 71,332 respectively.

Olumekun assured that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, transfers and replacements would be ready ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

On party registration, the commissioner revealed that INEC had so far received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking recognition as political parties, with 19 new applications submitted as of September 3. He added that a shortlist of pre-qualified groups was being finalised.

He cautioned associations against frequently altering their logos, acronyms or leadership structures, warning that such inconsistencies were slowing down the vetting process.

“As always, the commission will treat all applications fairly and will continue to communicate with Nigerians on all its activities,” Olumekun said.
