FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against joining the 2027 presidential race, urging him to remain a respected statesman rather than re-enter politics.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike said Jonathan enjoyed international recognition that should not be jeopardised by another run. He criticised those pushing the former president’s candidacy, accusing them of betrayal in 2015 and questioning their current motives.

Wike also dismissed talks of readmitting former Anambra governor Peter Obi into the Peoples Democratic Party. Obi, who contested the 2023 election on the Labour Party’s platform, has reportedly been courted by some PDP leaders. But Wike described such a move as hypocritical, recalling Obi’s past attacks on the party. According to him, bringing Obi back would damage unity and credibility.

He further warned the PDP against internal conflicts ahead of its national convention in November, stressing that unresolved disputes could derail the event.
On his own future, Wike ruled out challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027, insisting he remained loyal to his appointer. “I have integrity and character. There is no way my appointer is there and I turn around to contest against him,” he said.
He also criticised Obi’s advocacy for a single-term presidency, arguing that such promises were unrealistic once political realities set in.
Wike’s remarks come amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return, the PDP’s internal wrangling, and efforts to lure Obi back to the party as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
