The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has moved quickly to address the damaged Shagamu-Benin Expressway bridge located at the boundary of Edo and Ondo states, following public concerns raised in a viral video.

The video showed the collapse of a section of the bridge, which led to a truck accident and heavy gridlock on the highway. Umahi visited the site over the weekend and announced immediate rehabilitation work. He explained that the bridge, built in 1981, had weakened over time, recalling a similar failure in 2024 that was fixed. He said the current repair would take no more than 45 days, allowing the concrete to properly mature, and confirmed that work began earlier than the September 1 schedule.

Umahi acknowledged the effort of the content creator who raised the alarm, saying the government welcomes public input on road safety. He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is already handling more than 30 bridge rehabilitation projects across the country in 2025.
