Amaechi Formally Announce Intension For 2027 Presidency

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally announced his intention to seek the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.

Amaechi revealed his plan on Wednesday in Kano after a meeting with a coalition of traders. He made it clear that he would not withdraw for any other aspirant, stressing that party members should be allowed to decide their preferred candidate through a transparent contest.

The former Minister of Transportation said he expects the ADC to conduct a credible primary, noting that internal democracy would strengthen the party. He positioned himself as one of the strongest contenders in the race and insisted he was better prepared than most of those already in the field.

Amaechi used the opportunity to criticise the Bola Tinubu administration, saying Nigerians were struggling under current policies. He argued that hardship was widespread across the country and that the government had not delivered genuine inclusion in political appointments, as only a small circle close to the president had benefited.

On the question of zoning within the ADC, Amaechi said the decision would be left to party leaders but added that it would not affect his decision to run. He described his candidacy as one that could unite Nigerians, pointing to his southern background and saying his region has no political conflict with others.

In response to claims that his political base in Rivers State had weakened due to the influence of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, Amaechi dismissed such suggestions. He recalled the large turnout at his recent visit to the state during the launch of ADC activities, noting that the show of support was voluntary and not induced.

With his declaration, the former governor has positioned himself as a major contender to watch as the ADC prepares for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.
