The violent clash between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths at Okere Roundabout in Warri has triggered a political dispute between Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central, and former House of Representatives member Daniel Reyenieju.

Following the incident, Senator Dafinone condemned the violence and urged all sides to embrace peace. He described the attack on the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) House at Okere-Urhobo as an attack on the entire Urhobo people. He also called on security agencies to act fairly and promote dialogue and reconciliation to prevent further unrest.

Reyenieju, who represented Warri Federal Constituency, faulted Dafinone’s remarks, accusing him of being insensitive and divisive. He argued that the senator gave more attention to the destruction of the UPU building than to the lives lost and injuries sustained during the clashes.

He warned that describing the attack on the UPU House as an attack on the Urhobo nation could incite ethnic tension. According to him, the UPU is a respected socio-cultural body but should not be equated with the entire destiny of the constituency or Delta State.
The former lawmaker said Dafinone’s role as a senator should be to calm tensions rather than inflame them. He questioned why the senator did not show equal outrage when innocent people were attacked and injured, stressing that human lives must take priority over structures.
Reyenieju maintained that Warri belongs to all ethnic groups and no community should place its interest above collective peace. He urged Dafinone to moderate his language, act with neutrality, and work towards unity, insisting that the people of Warri deserve peace and progress rather than deepening division.
