Sowore Faces Court Over Forgery, Cyber bullying Charges As Supporters Rally In Abuja

Human rights activist and SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday to answer charges brought against him by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Sowore, who arrived around 8:52 a.m. with a travel bag and a group of supporters, is accused of forging a police wireless message dated July 30, 2025, and circulating it online to damage the image of the Nigeria Police Force.

The case, before Justice Emeka Nwite in Court 8, comes after Sowore urged the public to attend, describing the charges as a political witch-hunt. He dismissed Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP” and accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of using the same repressive measures as the Buhari government.

On Tuesday, Sowore alleged that the police chief had attempted to lure him into private meetings, which he rejected, insisting he would not be part of what he called “crimes against the Nigerian people.”

In a related development, Justice Nwite earlier granted a police ex parte motion directing six banks — UBA, GTB, Zenith Bank, Opay, Moniepoint, and Kuda Microfinance Bank — to release Sowore’s account details from January 2024 to date. The police claim Sowore and his media foundation are under investigation for terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

Sowore maintains that the allegations are fabricated to silence him, insisting the case is a desperate attempt to clamp down on dissent.
