Former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ude Chukwu, has formally defected to the Labour Party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.

The move was announced on Saturday at his hometown in Nkporo, Ohafia Local Government Area.

Chukwu, who served as deputy to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, said the decision to switch parties opens a fresh political chapter for him and his community. He noted that the people of Nkporo are now aligning with the Labour Party.

His defection comes weeks after he resigned from the PDP, where he explained his exit was based on personal reasons. Chukwu said his choice was also influenced by what he described as the leadership style of Governor Alex Otti, which he sees as people-focused and purposeful.
The event was attended by party leaders and supporters who welcomed him into the fold. Governor Otti pledged that Nkporo would benefit from development projects already planned for different parts of the state. He assured residents that ongoing works such as the Nkporo road project would receive the same attention as those in Aba and Umuahia.
Labour Party leaders in the state said Chukwu’s entry would boost the party’s strength in Ohafia and beyond. The party’s chairman in the area, Godwin Kalu, promised unity and development, while the PDP chairman in Ohafia, Egesi Eze Azu, also defected alongside Chukwu.
The development further reshapes the political landscape in Abia, with Labour Party consolidating its presence in more communities.
