The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight members of a local vigilante group for assaulting a female corps member, Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

Governor Charles Soludo’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, announced the dismissal in Awka on Wednesday. He said the government had settled the victim’s medical bills, replaced her damaged belongings, and formally apologised to her family and the NYSC.

According to Emeakayi, the operatives, who claimed they were chasing suspected cultists, acted outside their mandate. He said they would be handed over to the police for prosecution. “The Soludo administration will not tolerate any form of brutality or abuse of office. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face immediate dismissal and prosecution,” he stated.

The attack, captured in a viral video, showed members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, beating and stripping the corps member despite her presenting a valid NYSC ID card.
Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central, condemned the incident as “barbaric and inhuman,” describing it as a disgrace to national service. He demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved, while also urging the state government to compensate the victim for the trauma and damages suffered.
The senator further called on NYSC authorities to strengthen protection for corps members serving in Anambra, stressing that parents must not lose faith in the scheme’s ability to safeguard their children.
When contacted on whether the dismissed operatives had been handed over to the police, state police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga did not respond to calls or messages.
