A fire outbreak on Friday evening destroyed key facilities at Fresh FM, the Ibadan-based radio station owned by musician Yinka Ayefele.
The incident left staff and residents in shock as flames tore through the building located at Challenge, Ibadan.
The blaze gutted major sections of the station, including the studios of Fresh 105.9 and Blast 98.3, the newsroom, and the transmitter/server room. Several pieces of broadcasting equipment were also destroyed during the incident, causing heavy damage to the station’s operations.
Eyewitness videos shared online showed people in confusion as the fire raged, with desperate attempts made to contain the flames. Staff tried to use in-house extinguishers, but the intensity of the inferno overwhelmed their efforts before firefighters arrived.
Fire service officials, with the help of residents and passers-by, later battled the blaze and were able to bring it under control. No lives were reported lost, but the financial impact is expected to be severe as the management continues to assess the scale of damage.
The management of Fresh FM expressed sadness over the loss, describing the incident as devastating. Staff members also appealed to authorities for quick support to help the station recover and resume broadcast services.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigations are expected to begin soon to establish what triggered the outbreak.
