Obi said the approach taken by the anti-graft agency raises doubts about fairness in the fight against corruption.

His comments, shared on social media on Tuesday, came after the EFCC detained Tambuwal, a former Sokoto State governor, over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to about ₦189 billion. The withdrawals, reportedly made during his tenure from 2015 to 2023, were taken from various state accounts, including those belonging to the Federation Account Allocation Committee, the Government House, and the Secretary to the State Government.

The EFCC is investigating the transactions for possible violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. The agency suspects that the funds were withdrawn in tranches to evade detection.

Obi argued that the credibility of the anti-corruption drive depends on transparency, consistency, and the absence of political bias. He warned that targeting political opponents or perceived critics of the government could undermine public trust in the process.

Tambuwal, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015, has not publicly commented on the allegations since his arrest. The EFCC is yet to release full details of its investigation.
