The Peoples Democratic Party is preparing to announce its zoning arrangement for the 2027 general elections on August 25, according to a programme of activities seen over the weekend.

The schedule, signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar M. Bature, shows a series of meetings beginning August 24. That day, the National Working Committee and National Caucus will meet to set the agenda for the 102nd National Executive Committee session the following day. The NEC will then consider and adopt the Diri committee’s proposal.

The activities will continue through to December 2025 and include primaries, ward and state congresses, and the national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16. The process will also determine the allocation of key party offices between northern and southern zones, following the PDP’s established rotation pattern.
Party insiders say the zoning decision will influence possible bids from notable figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, governors from Oyo and Bauchi states, and former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim. Some leaders, such as Professor Jerry Gana, have been urging that the presidential ticket go to the South.
The PDP traditionally alternates top offices between regions. The national chairmanship is currently in the North, specifically the North Central zone, while the national secretary’s position is held by the South East. Other leadership slots are also split between the zones, ensuring each has a share of influential roles.
Former National Vice Chairman Eddy Olafeso said the party is working to regain its standing in Nigeria’s political space. He noted that the PDP’s current position outside government gives it the time and perspective to connect better with Nigerians and address national challenges. On leadership choices, he maintained that all members have the right to contest positions, but final decisions will be made collectively.
