Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has backed a constitutional change that would limit Nigerian presidents to a single tenure.

Speaking in Bauchi during a visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi proposed a five-year term without the option of re-election, saying it would allow leaders to focus on governance instead of campaigning for a second term.

Obi argued that the current two-term system distracts presidents, with much of their time spent preparing for re-election rather than addressing the country’s challenges. He said a single term, similar to South Korea’s model, would ensure that any president who assumes office works with a clear timeline and leaves once the job is done.
