US Warns Nigerian Students Of Visa Risks For Skipping Classes Or Leaving School

Nigerian students studying in the United States have been warned that abandoning their academic programs or skipping classes could lead to the cancellation of their visas.

The US embassy issued the caution on Monday through its official X account, calling on students to strictly follow the terms of their student visas.

According to the embassy, dropping out of school, failing to attend classes, or walking away from a program without notifying the school could result in visa revocation. This action, they noted, could also affect a student’s chance of receiving future US visas.

The embassy emphasized that international students on F-1 or M-1 visas must be enrolled in a full course load and maintain steady academic progress. These are part of the basic requirements for holding a valid student visa in the United States.

Students who may be unable to maintain full-time study are advised to speak with their Designated School Official (DSO) immediately. In certain cases, a reduced course load might be allowed, but this must be officially approved by the school and documented.

The embassy also urged students to talk to their DSO if they’re concerned about completing their academic program on time. Those who need more time must apply for a program extension before the expiration date listed on their Form I-20.

This latest advisory follows a series of recent warnings from the US about visa compliance. In July, the embassy issued a separate notice to visa applicants, warning that anyone caught using fake documents during the application process would face a lifetime ban from entering the country.

These moves reflect the US government’s ongoing efforts to tighten immigration control and maintain the integrity of its visa system. Students are therefore urged to take these rules seriously, follow due process, and stay in communication with their schools to avoid jeopardizing their status.
