Nigeria’s Accountant General Elected Deputy Chair Of African Finance Body

Nigeria’s Accountant-General, Shamsedeen Ogunjimi, has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the African Association of Accountants General (AAAG).

His election took place during the association’s annual general meeting in Accra, Ghana, where Accountants General from across the continent gathered.

The AAAG is a Pan-African platform that brings together heads of national treasury departments from 22 member countries. Formed in July 2023 with support from the African Union Commission, the group focuses on improving public financial management in Africa. Its goal is to strengthen transparency, accountability, and effective handling of public resources.

By selecting Ogunjimi for the deputy leadership role, member states acknowledged Nigeria’s growing influence and the professional reputation of its chief accountant. His election is seen as a nod to Nigeria’s recent efforts to improve fiscal discipline and its role in shaping financial reforms on the continent.

In his new position, Ogunjimi is expected to contribute to the development of better accounting practices across Africa. He will also support efforts to modernise public financial systems and encourage cooperation among countries in the region. The position puts Nigeria in a stronger place to contribute to the shaping of continental policies that affect budgeting, transparency, and financial reporting.
