Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has backed the recent protests by women in Kano over rising gang violence and phone snatching, warning that openly using phones in public has become life-threatening.

Over the weekend, hundreds of women and girls took to the streets in the Kofar Mata area to protest the activities of street gangs known as Yandaba. The protesters said the gangs were terrorising communities with killings, stabbings, and robberies. One woman said they were tired of losing their husbands and sons to senseless violence.

Kofar Mata was one of the flashpoints of gang clashes between July 31 and August 1.

Reacting on social media, Shehu Sani praised the protesters for speaking out, saying phone snatching has become so deadly that simply displaying a phone in public could now be considered a “suicide mission.”
“Many victims have paid dearly with their lives in the hands of those knife-wielding criminals. Women have become the most vulnerable,” Sani said.
The Kano State Police Command said efforts were ongoing to combat the violence. A joint committee led by Commissioner Yusuf Kofar Mata has been set up by the government to tackle the growing threat of gang activity and phone theft in the state.
