In a viral video circulating online, a group of Ghanaians staged a demonstration accusing Nigerians of violating local cultural and social norms. The protesters chanted for their expulsion, sparking outrage among Nigerians at home and abroad.

Reacting to the video, the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations described the protest as deeply troubling and against the spirit of African unity. In a statement issued Tuesday, the committee called the incident “contrary to the bond of brotherhood” that has long existed between Nigeria and Ghana.

The committee stressed the need for both countries, as key members of ECOWAS, to promote peace, regional integration, and cooperation as outlined in the ECOWAS charter.
It also praised officials working to calm tensions, including NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, and both nations’ High Commissioners. Their swift, diplomatic efforts were credited with helping to ease the situation.
The Senate reassured Nigerians living in Ghana that their rights and welfare remain a top priority, adding that diplomatic channels are being actively used to resolve the issue.
It urged Nigerian citizens in Ghana to stay peaceful, obey local laws, and avoid inflammatory language that could worsen the situation.
