Tinubu Reward To Super Falcons Sparking Debate Over National Priorities

President Bola Tinubu’s $100,000 cash reward and national honours for each member of the Super Falcons have sparked wide public reaction, with supporters and critics locked in debate over how national achievements should be recognised.

The reward came shortly after the Super Falcons won their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title by beating Morocco in a dramatic 3–2 final. As the team returned home to national celebrations, the Presidency rolled out generous gifts to honour their performance—$100,000 per player, a three-bedroom flat at the newly renovated Hope Estate, and the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honour.

People across the country reacted in different ways. On one side, many fans and observers applauded the move as a show of appreciation for hard work and national pride. On the other hand, critics questioned whether the funds could have been better spent in other sectors, especially as economic challenges continue to affect millions of Nigerians.

Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga defended the gesture, stating it was right to honour individuals who bring glory to the country through skill and dedication. He compared the Falcons’ reward to the ₦150 million prize given to the winner of Big Brother Naija, arguing that sports achievements deserve even more recognition.

He took to social media to express his view that the Falcons’ victory should not go unnoticed or unrewarded, especially given the sacrifices and years of training that go into representing the country on an international stage.

Alongside Tinubu’s reward, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum also announced an additional ₦10 million for each player and technical crew member. This collective show of appreciation has raised further questions on how the country chooses to celebrate different kinds of success.

Some observers believe the comparison to entertainment shows like BBNaija raises a valid point about national values. However, others say the president’s decision appears politically driven and does not address pressing issues such as inflation, education, and unemployment.
