Reps Celebrate Buhari’s Impact on Infrastructure and Lawmaking

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was honoured by members of the House of Representatives for his contributions to Nigeria’s development, following his death on July 13 in London at the age of 82.

A special session was held at the National Assembly to reflect on his life, leadership, and lasting influence on the country.

The ceremony brought lawmakers together to remember Buhari’s years of public service, beginning from his days as a young military officer to becoming a two-term democratic President. The Speaker of the House, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, led the tributes, calling on Nigerians to allow Buhari’s memory to bring unity rather than division.

At the session, legislators recalled how Buhari’s administration was marked by bold efforts to transform Nigeria’s infrastructure. Projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan railways, the Second Niger Bridge, and extensive road repairs were pointed to as milestones. His government also pushed for reforms in governance through various laws and policies that reshaped critical sectors.

Buhari’s work with the National Assembly was praised for its collaborative spirit. Between 2015 and 2023, a total of 129 bills were signed into law under his watch. Many of these laws tackled long-standing national issues, including youth participation in politics, police reforms, petroleum regulation, disability rights, and support for tech startups. Lawmakers described this era as one of the most productive in Nigeria’s legislative history.

Beyond the laws, the former President was commended for upholding the independence of the legislature. Lawmakers said Buhari respected the separation of powers and never interfered with the internal affairs of the National Assembly. He reportedly directed his ministers and agency heads to cooperate fully with House committees, especially during budget sessions. This, they said, helped bring discipline back to Nigeria’s financial planning.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, described Buhari as a man of integrity and discipline. He said the former President’s dedication and character left a strong impression on Nigerians across backgrounds and generations. Other lawmakers echoed these sentiments, noting that Buhari’s War Against Indiscipline program and firm leadership style defined his time in office both as military ruler and civilian President.

They agreed that his legacy goes beyond the structures he built. It lives in the values he stood for—honesty, service, and nation-building.

As lawmakers paid their last respects, the chamber reflected on a life spent in service, not without controversy, but marked by a deep commitment to Nigeria’s progress. The House resolved to carry on the principles Buhari believed in, as they continue their own work in shaping the country’s future.
