The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai are still finalising issues in their former parties, which is why they haven’t formally joined the ADC despite being key members of its coalition.

Speaking in Abuja, ADC’s publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, explained that both leaders were granted permission to settle ongoing election matters in their former parties. In Obi’s case, this includes governorship by-elections involving candidates already on the Labour Party platform.

Abdullahi stressed that both men remain committed to the coalition and are expected to join fully once those matters are resolved.

Meanwhile, former transportation minister and ex-Rivers governor, Chibuike Amaechi, is reportedly set to formally join ADC on Wednesday, July 23. He resigned from the APC three weeks ago.

Atiku Abubakar, who helped form the coalition, has also quit the PDP but is yet to declare official membership of ADC.
According to the party’s constitution, only registered, card-carrying members with no links to other parties can contest elections under the ADC.
Addressing concerns about internal democracy, Abdullahi said the party has no anointed presidential candidate and will ensure a level playing field. “This is democracy,” he said. “No one is above the process.”
He added that the party has no legal issues and is confident in its current standing.
In Rivers State, Amaechi is already being recognised as the party leader. The ADC state spokesperson, Chief Luckyman Egila, confirmed Amaechi will meet party members in Port Harcourt on July 23. He said the visit is part of wider consultations as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
