Supporters of Peter Obi, popularly known as the Obidients, have called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his rumoured 2027 presidential ambition and back Obi for the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The appeal was made during a series of birthday rallies held across Abia State on Friday to mark Obi’s 64th birthday. The “one million man march” took place in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Uzuakoli.
Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, Chairman of the Organising Committee and a coordinator of the Obidient movement in Abia, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Umuahia. He praised Atiku’s past efforts in national development but urged him to make a final sacrifice by supporting Obi’s presidential bid.
“We appreciate Atiku’s role in forming the opposition coalition, but we plead that the ticket be ceded to the South. Obi has the national appeal and integrity needed to defeat the APC and move Nigeria forward,” Obiesili said.
He added that Obi remains the most credible candidate with a proven track record, stressing that the former Anambra governor’s passion for the masses cuts across political, religious, and ethnic lines.
Obiesili said the rally was a voluntary show of support, not just for Obi’s birthday, but for what he represents: transparency, humility, and a commitment to the common good.
“If someone better than Obi comes along, we’ll support them,” he said. “But for now, no politician in Nigeria has proven to be as clean, consistent, and compassionate as Peter Obi.”
