The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has dismissed Friday’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Umuahia as illegal, rejecting the emergence of Nenadi Usman as interim national chairman.

Usman was named interim chair by a rival faction reportedly loyal to Abia State Governor Alex Otti. The group also appointed former senator Darlington Nwokocha as interim national secretary, declaring their intention to oversee the party’s affairs until a new NEC is elected at an upcoming national convention.

But in a swift reaction, the Abure-led leadership described the meeting and its outcome as unconstitutional and irrelevant. In a statement signed by Umar Ibrahim, the party’s national secretary, the faction insisted that only the national secretary, in consultation with the national chairman, is empowered by the LP constitution to convene a NEC meeting.

Quoting Articles 14(4)(b) and 13(B)(xii), Ibrahim said the NEC gathering in Umuahia lacked legal backing and was therefore null and void. He added that no leadership vacancy exists within the party, and none is expected until 2028.

“The so-called NEC meeting is an illegal jamboree staged by suspended individuals,” the statement read. “There has never been any vacancy in our leadership. The Supreme Court reaffirmed our legitimacy on April 4, 2025.”
He also accused Governor Otti of undermining party unity, claiming many of Otti’s allies have distanced themselves from the rebellion.
“He’s fighting a lost battle,” Ibrahim said. “Rather than chasing shadows, he should focus on the development of Abia State.”
The Abure-led LP urged members and supporters to ignore the Umuahia meeting and stand by the existing leadership.
