Makinde Mourns Olubadan Olakulehin, Promises Full Support For Family

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away early Monday at the age of 90.

Receiving a delegation from the royal family at Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Makinde assured them of the state government’s full support during the mourning period and pledged to give the late monarch a befitting burial.

The delegation included Aare Mayegun of Ibadanland and former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Bayo Oyero; the monarch’s younger brother, Osuolale Olakulehin; and his son, Olasumbo Owolabi.

“We don’t always want them to go; we want them to stay with us. But God has designed our bodies for a certain period of time,” the governor said. “The government will definitely stay with the family and play whatever roles we are supposed to play.”

Makinde, whose own father died 13 years ago on the same date, offered prayers for strength for the Olubadan’s family.

Earlier, Bayo Oyero thanked the governor for approving Oba Olakulehin’s ascension to the throne despite earlier controversies and commended the state for organising a historic coronation ceremony.

Oba Olakulehin succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun and passed away during his 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations. Plans for his burial are expected to be announced in the coming days.
