Tinubu Gives Military Full Backing To Crush Threats To Nigeria’s Unity

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian military to act swiftly and without restraint against all groups threatening the country’s unity.

The order was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held at Murtala Square in Kaduna.

The event brought together top government officials, military leaders, traditional rulers, and diplomats, as the country marked the resilience of its armed forces. Tinubu used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s full support for the military in its campaign against terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and separatist violence.

He pledged that the government would continue to supply advanced weapons, intelligence, and improved welfare to ensure that the troops have everything they need to defend the country. He described the threats facing Nigeria as dangerous to every citizen regardless of ethnicity or religion, calling on the Army to rise fully to its responsibilities.

The President also honoured soldiers who died or were injured in service, saying their sacrifices will not be forgotten. He praised their families for their strength and dedication, especially the contributions of military spouses who hold the home front together.

At the centre of this year’s celebration was the Army’s renewed focus on the “Soldier First” approach — a strategy aimed at placing troop welfare and professionalism at the heart of its ongoing transformation. According to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, this approach is key to building a more efficient, motivated, and disciplined force.

The Army Chief assured Nigerians that the military remains committed to working with the Navy, Air Force, and other agencies to neutralise threats and secure the nation’s sovereignty. He said the Nigerian Army’s legacy as a guardian of national unity, dating back to 1863, will continue to guide its mission today.

The celebration included a parade, tactical displays, and exhibitions of military equipment, all showcasing the Army’s readiness and evolving capacity. The atmosphere in Kaduna reflected a blend of pride, patriotism, and determination to keep Nigeria safe.

Among those who attended were former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa. Also present were former Army Chiefs Azubuike Ihejirika, Tukur Buratai, and Faruk Yahaya, alongside traditional rulers and lawmakers.

This year’s Army Day reinforced both the strength of Nigeria’s military and the urgency of the challenges it faces. The event served as a strong signal that the government is not only backing the military in words but also preparing it in action for the battles ahead.
